India’s Toxic Tool 10:00, 2001 (Ref: AS01142)

Description

We investigate claims of radioactive contamination near India’s largest uranium mine and the abnormally high death rate among babies at birth. The mines allegedly emit radiation many times the limits considered safe and thousands of poor and ignorant people are forced to eat, drink and breathe uranium. The mines, in Bihar State, are the sole source of uranium for India’s 10 nuclear power stations. The birth of every child with a congenital deformity renews suspicion that the land is being poisoned by radioactive contamination. We visited the region and spoke to the people affected and also to the government minister responsible for the mines.
