Mentally ill people chained to trees, or locked into tree trunks – practices reminiscent of medieval times. These are the remarkable scenes that we witnessed in the Ivory Coast.
But we also found one man who has embarked on a crusade of rescue and enlightenment. Having wrestled with mental illness himself, he’s now trying to find more humane ways to help the sick and quite literally, break the chains that bind so many of Africa’s mentally ill.
